What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are thin layers, made from various materials, that cover the front surface of the tooth and improve its appearance. Wouldn’t you love to have a perfect, confident smile?

They can adjust the colour, shape and size of the tooth, while giving it a natural look. And the biggest advantage is that… some people won’t even know you have veneers! It will be your secret!

Advantages of dental veneers

Besides the main benefit, a natural-looking smile, you can also consider the other advantages of dental veneers when you opt for this solution:

  • They correct the spacing between teeth, covering any gaps.
  • They give a suitable shape to irregular, chipped, fractured or worn teeth.
  • Your teeth will have a whiter shade.
  • They correct an uneven gum line.
  • They can strengthen weaker teeth by providing an extra layer.
  • They slightly correct various types of bite, so you will be able to chew much more comfortably and enjoy the taste of food.

Types of dental veneers

Depending on your wishes and the dentist’s personalised recommendations, you can opt for veneers made of zirconia, ceramic or porcelain, plastic or composite.

Ceramic or porcelain veneers are the most durable and come in a wide range of shades, best imitating the natural appearance of the tooth.

Zirconia usually comes in a single shade and gives that immaculate, Hollywood-style smile.

However, you should bear in mind that composite materials are not as durable and deteriorate quickly; they are usually used temporarily, until a more extensive restoration is completed.

Not sure which type of veneers to choose, or afraid that your smile won’t be the way you want it?

No problem – you can try removable dental veneers for a while to make sure the final result is the right one for you.

There are dental veneers with preparation (the tooth needs to be ground down before application), which are the most commonly used, and no-prep veneers (the tooth does not need to be ground down).

Because we want to give everyone the chance to have perfect teeth, regardless of gender, at our clinic you will find dental veneers for both men and women in various designs and colours.

Stages of the dental veneers procedure

It is good to know that the procedure involves several important stages, which we present below:

Step 1: Initial consultation

At the first consultation, the dentist examines your teeth and decides whether this technique is suitable for you. If you are eligible, you will discuss the type of veneers and the colour, and the dentist may carry out a scan, a photo protocol and a computer simulation of your teeth, so you can see what the final result would look like.

Step 2: Preparing the teeth

As already mentioned, the teeth generally need to be ground down beforehand, removing a layer of enamel.

There is no need to worry. It is a minimally invasive procedure, but you may feel some discomfort, which is why you will most likely be given a local anaesthetic.

Step 3: Taking impressions

After the preparation, the dentist will create a mould of your teeth, either with a conventional impression or using a scanner, and you will choose the colour together.

The impression and shade will then be sent to the laboratory to make the veneers that are right for you.

Step 4: Fitting temporary veneers

To protect your teeth until the final stage, temporary acrylic veneers will be fitted.

Step 5: Fitting permanent veneers

After a few days, you will return to the dentist to complete the process. The temporary veneers are removed, the surface is disinfected, and then the permanent veneers are applied and cemented.

Have another question?

Call us and we will answer you directly.

  • Since the enamel has been removed and the process cannot be reversed, the teeth may become more sensitive until the final dental veneers are cemented.
  • There may be colour differences between your natural teeth and the teeth that have veneers.
  • Even with veneers, teeth can decay if you do not maintain proper hygiene.
  • There is a risk that veneers may chip or fracture as a result of bruxism or trauma and need replacing.

A veneer covers only the front of the tooth, correcting aesthetic problems, whereas a crown covers the whole tooth, correcting functional defects.

A crown can also be placed on top of a dental implant; a veneer cannot. More of the tooth is ground down when a crown is to be placed than for a veneer.

There are a few groups of people who cannot opt for the veneer procedure:

  • Those who already have prosthetic restorations – veneers are applied only to natural teeth.
  • Those with abnormally positioned teeth.
  • Those with advanced decay or gum problems.
  • Those with poor oral hygiene.
  • Those suffering from advanced bruxism.
  • Those under 18 years of age.

Since the teeth are ground down, the process takes place under local anaesthesia, so it is not painful.

It depends greatly on the material it is made from. A porcelain veneer can last 12 years or more, while a composite one needs to be redone every 2-3 years. Oral hygiene also plays an important role in their lifespan.
