What are braces?

Braces are a medical device which, when applied to the teeth, exerts a force on them that causes them to move into the correct position and line up with the other teeth in the arch.

They are a common and effective way of solving the problem from both an aesthetic and a functional point of view.

Braces have also evolved over time. Today they are much more comfortable, more elegant and in some cases almost invisible. And more than anything, they are even considered a trendy accessory, given the variety of designs you can choose from.

When are braces needed?

You might usually opt for orthodontic braces when your teeth:

  • Are crowded or have gaps.
  • Are rotated or not in the correct position.
  • Have drifted out of place.
  • Have not erupted and are still impacted in the bone.

Other situations in which you should go for a dental consultation to see whether braces are needed:

  • You have difficulty flossing or brushing.
  • You often bite your tongue or cheek.
  • You have speech difficulties.
  • You have jaw pain when you chew.
  • You breathe through your mouth.
  • You hear sounds (clicks) when you yawn or chew.
  • You have an incorrect bite.
  • Your gums are receding.

Types of braces

There are several types: fixed or removable, visible or invisible. Depending on the material used, there are metal, ceramic and sapphire braces.

Fixed braces consist of:

  • Brackets: these are fixed to the teeth and form the immobile part.
  • The archwire: this connects the brackets and forms the active part.
  • Ligatures: these hold the archwire in place and can come in different colours.

Modern braces use aligners rather than a system made up of these elements.

At the Dr. Radu Dumitru Clinic, we offer you various braces options at affordable prices, so you can choose what you want without worrying about money!

Advantages of wearing braces

It is important to know that wearing braces is not a whim, as some people tend to believe.

They help you avoid serious problems such as tooth decay, dental erosion, periodontal disease, gastric disorders or temporomandibular joint disorders, which can arise from poorly aligned teeth.

In addition, there are other advantages:

  • They give you a perfect smile and more self-confidence.
  • They make brushing and flossing easier.
  • They correct malocclusions, reducing the risk of grinding or heavy clenching of the teeth.
  • They improve speech.

Stages of fitting braces for children or adults

Most patients, especially younger ones, may be reluctant when they find out that the solution to their problems is to have this device fitted.

We will explain the stages of fitting braces for children or adults, so you will see that it is not complicated and there is nothing to worry about.

There may be differences depending on the type of braces you choose, as well as each patient’s particular characteristics. Normally, the procedure involves the following steps:

Step 1: Initial consultation

The dentist will examine your mouth and teeth and see whether braces are needed, whether for you or for your child.

Then, if appropriate, you will discuss the details of the type of braces, how long they need to be worn and the follow-up recommendations.

Step 2: Fitting

In this step the teeth are thoroughly cleaned, with scaling and professional brushing carried out before the brackets are positioned.

The brackets are then bonded to each tooth with dental cement, and a blue light is used to set the adhesive.

Next, the archwire is positioned. With traditional braces, ligatures are used to secure the archwire.

Here you can be creative and choose your favourite colour for the ligatures. With ligature-free braces, the dentist only needs to slide the bracket elements over the wire. Finally, the excess ends of the wires are cut and tucked in to avoid injuring the cheeks.

Step 3: Adjustment

About every 4 weeks you will need to come back to the dentist to have the braces adjusted – the wires are adjusted and the ligatures changed.

After each adjustment you may feel pain or discomfort for a few days, caused by the teeth changing position. A mild painkiller solves the problem.

Step 4: Removal

The long-awaited moment: after a period agreed with the dentist, the ligatures and wires are removed, followed by the bond between the brackets and the teeth. Any excess cement is then cleaned off.

Your smile is now perfect!

The dentist will recommend that you wear a retainer for a while to stabilise the teeth and stop them from shifting out of their new position.

Duration and cost of the braces fitting procedure

The fitting procedure itself takes about 45 minutes, and each adjustment appointment about 15 minutes.

While costs used to be high, nowadays more and more people can afford this investment in their smile.

When it comes to braces for children or adults and their price, the material and type of braces are also factors that influence the amount you need to pay.

Dental care while wearing braces

If you or your child wear braces, it is important to keep in mind a few things relating to dental hygiene:

  • Thorough brushing twice a day for at least 2 minutes with a medium toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Make sure every tooth is brushed!
  • Use mouthwash and interdental brushes.
  • If food debris still remains, you can opt for an oral irrigator.
  • It is important to check whether your teeth are properly cleaned and whether any ligatures or wires have come loose.
  • Talk to the dentist if any problem arises or if you need further clarification.
  • Be careful what you eat and how; it is advisable to cut up food during meals, so you avoid biting into it.
